Aparece documentado ya como apelativo locativo en 1002. Poseyeron heredades en su término el monasterio de Leire desde siglo XI y los Hospitalarios de San Juan de Jerusalén desde el XIII. En 1846, al disgregarse Valdizarbe*, del que formaba parte, quedó como ayuntamiento independiente. Hasta las reformas de 1835-1845 gobernaron Tirapu el diputado del valle y los regidores que elegían los vecinos del pueblo. Tras las reformas, Tirapu quedó como ayuntamiento independiente, organizado según el régimen común.
